SALISBURY TO GILLINGHAM SPONSORED WALK

As part of the 150 years of Railway at Salisbury it was decided to have a sponsored walk from Salisbury Station to Gillingham Station

in aid of the Portsmouth Hospital's Renal Unit.

On Thursday 2nd April 2009, John Say (Network Rail Signaller at Salisbury), Matt Hurst (Network Rail MOM Salisbury), Kevin Goddard (Network Rail Signaller at

Templecombe), Alex Spry (Network Rail Crossingkeeper at Feniton), Gemma Hirst (SWT Commercial Guard at Salisbury), Chris Pelling (SWT Driver Salisbury)

and Garry Shaftoe (Network Rail LOM Salisbury) set out on the 25+ mile trek.

A rough estimate, at this time, is that a total in excess of £1000 has been raised for the Renal Unit at Portsmouth Hospital.

On 24th July 2009, some of the group went to the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham to present the Renal Unit with the sum raised from the event. Chandler and Niles Thick presented a cheque for £2300 to Consultant Nephrologist Dr Tim Leach.

A few words from Matt Hurst who is, again, taking part in this years walk:-

As you may or may not know, over the past three years we have been embarking on a walk from Salisbury which will ultimately see us reach the Atlantic Coast following the route of the ex Southern Railways Atlantic Coast Express.

In 2009 we walked from Salisbury to Gillingham raising £2300 for the Portsmouth Hospital Trust Renal Unit.

In 2010 the walk continued from Gillingham to Yeovil with £1500 raised for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

On 1st April 2011 we will be setting off again, this time from Yeovil with the destination this year being the former station at Chard. Due to a member of South West Trains, Salisbury staff being diagnosed last year with Motor Neurone Disease we thought it fitting that the chosen charity this year is MNDA (Motor Neurone Disease Association).

We would appreciate any financial support you could give us for this next leg of our epic journey.

This year £3300 was raised for MNDA by completing the 20.6 miles from Yeovil Junction to Chard in very little over 9 hours. (9 hours and 7 mins).

Well it's that time of year again! This years walk from Chard to Feniton will take place on Friday 30th March. The chosen charity this year is Salisbury Hospicecare.

If anyone fancies coming along with us drop either me or one of the other participants a line or just put your hand in your pocket and give generously to this very worthwhile cause.
