CONTACTS

Garry.

Garry is the Local Operations Manager for Salisbury ASC. Starting out as a Signaller on the Warminster line, he was at Salisbury ASC from the beginning but realised it seemed too much like hard work and moved into management. Garry's area covers Salisbury, Gillingham, Templecombe, Sherborne and Yeovil Pen Mill but has been known to volunteer to look after and visit the Yeovil Local Operations Manager's area down to Feniton

John.

is the longest serving Signaller at Salisbury. He has been here from the outset, 26 years at the same box and says he thinks he's settled here now! John is the joker in the box (not intentionally). He has been described as a Luddite, Spurs supporter, a Champion of Q12, a Blair Babe (must be his blonde hair), deep pockets and short arms (this was found out after the Xmas party when John returned home with more money than he had started with!). He has been sent to Coventry, twice, and returned only to be eager to be sent there again!

On a more serious note, John took part in the Three Peaks Challenge last year, which entailed him climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon all under 22 hours. This was to raise money for the 1st Wilton Scout Goup, which was brought to John's attention by the late Bob Blandford MBE (an ex Salisbury Signaller) who had bequeathed a sum of money to the Scout group that he had held so dear.

George.

our friend from up north. After 21 years of mining that black gold from 6 miles out under the North Sea, George changed direction after the intervention of Maggie Thatcher and came to work on the railway. Starting off on the Durham Coast Line then again through Maggie's intervention (I think she had it in for me, personally) moved to Templecombe in 1995 and Salisbury in 1999. Being a Mackem still supports the Black Cats and sometimes takes John back up North, where you can buy 3 pints of beer and still get change out of a fiver, to watch Sunderland play Spurs at the Stadium of Light.

Paul.

is the handyman of the panel, basically he owns lots of tools and has at least some idea what they do. Fed up with selling electrical stuff for a living. Paul started on the Railway in 2000 and came to Salisbury in Jan 2002 via Marchwood and Wool Signalboxes. Don't ask about how he broke his ankle, all we know is that there was a Batman suit, a bed, an open window and a wardrobe involved. Paul is the resident expert on cakes and especially Cherry Bakewells. The Christmas Safety Critical Mince Pie list is also Paul’s work.

Graham.

used to work as an announcer for SWT at Salisbury ASC. Arrived at Salisbury via Yeovil Junction in 2002 and is a railway enthusiast. Graham is our expert on Crumpets.

Nigel.

joined the railway in 1979 at Bournemouth West as a carriage cleaner, moved to Poole as a shunter the following year. 1985 -1991 were spent in the West Midlands as a shunter, Guard (Bescot), Relief Yard Chargeman (Saltley area) and Relief Yard Supervisor (Washwood Heath and Bescot). Returned to the Southern as a MOM at Poole (and later Bournemouth) until 2002, taking promotion to Shift Delivery Manager (Senior MOM) at Eastleigh. Having been displaced from SDM Eastleigh during 2005, was offered a new 'home' at Salisbury Panel, which was gratefully accepted!!! - John Say is pleased about it too..... so he says anyway!

Other interests include walking (particularly on the Fells in the Lake District) and Steam Engines (both Railway and Traction engines). Having been a Fireman and Driver at Swanage Railway since 1979 and, currently, also a Loco Inspector. Not only that but also heavily involved with ex GWR loco no. 6695, which, after 26 years of restoration, returned to steam at Swanage in 2005. Partner Ann, is also a Fireman (or should that be Fireperson) at Swanage and enjoys walking too.

James.

passed out at Salisbury in January 2007 and is the "baby of the panel". Starting his railway career with English,Welsh and Scottish in Doncaster was washed up at Salisbury via various establishments. Lower Quadrants Rule. Sometimes forgets he's on the Southern now!

Adrian

Adrian

is one of the Relief Signallers at Salisbury. At the moment he seems to be spending most of his time covering the 2 Basingstoke boxes.

Richard

is another Relief Signaller at Salisbury. He is known as Mr Cool because nothing fazes him, he's so laid back he's almost horizontal!!! He, too, seems to be spending most of his time covering the Basingstoke boxes.

Steve

is another Relief Signaller. He is a Roster Clerk's dream, known as The Martini Man (anytime, any place, anyway). Steve came to us via Marchwood and Yeovil Junction.

JJ.

JJ is one of the MOMs at Salisbury. John's main interest is Rugby, Rugby and did I mention Rugby. JJ also does a bit of DJ-ing (JJ the DJ) and can often be found mixing his decks at local railway discos accompanied by his Roadie & dance encourager, John Say! He is not renowned for being very sociable first thing in the morning and best to leave him for an hour or so! JJ used to be a Signaller at Wilton South and Gillingham before becoming a MOM at Salisbury.

When James first came to Salisbury his first impression of JJ was that he looked a bit like a 70's Porn star!!! JJ was so impressed by his impression on James that you can now order JJ's "Keep Fit" dvds from this website (all wrapped in plain brown envelopes). Only joking....... we send them out in clear wrapping paper!!!

Dave.

Daveis another one of the MOMs at Salisbury. If you have a question about the railway, ask Dave he'll probably know the answer! Dave started the railway on the Youth Training Scheme at Basingstoke in 1985 and worked at numerous locations. He has been a MOM at Salisbury since 1995.

Matt.

Another one of our MOMs . He is our eyes and ears in the Network Rail helicopter and also the Trespass and Vandalism champion for our area (he has all the makings of being a very good vandal) racing about with the BTP with all lights flashing or as Matt says "the Blues and Twos". Matt started his railway career with Freightliner in Southampton as a Contracts Manager after working through the '90's in the Shipping Industry. Matt's interests include travelling to far and distant lands, playing golf (badly!) and following the Mighty Saints back to the Promised Land! (A man must have a dream).

Steve.

steveis one of the Announcers for the CIS - Customer Information Service (no, not Co-Operative Insurance Service) at Salisbury who are located in the Signalling Centre. Steve is the Nomad of the box starting out as a student Nurse at Salisbury Infirmary, then worked in a camera shop in Bath and Bristol, then returned to nursing at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol but due to the poor financial rewards decided to work for a furniture manufacturer but after a motorcycling accident (he fell off the top of a human pyramid and broke both wrists, actually!) went to work "On the Buses" in Bath. After 24 years of being on the buses he jumped off and began an illustrious career with SWT as a RPA, then a Guard before finally retiring to the Announcers job.

Ros.

rozwas an Announcer at Salisbury.Ros liked cooking for her colleagues and considered branching out into the catering business after 10 years on the railway. She has now purchased the lease on the vacant Buffet at Yeovil Junction.

Ros wishes to apologise for the delay in the opening of Peppers, but this is due to circumstances beyond her control. She is hoping to be open in about 4 - 5 weeks! Ros has today, worked her last shift for SWT. She hopes to have a couple of days rest then it's time to get stuck into getting 'Peppers' 'ready for the Grand opening. Peppers opened on Tuesday 23rd October 2007at 06:00hours.

Dave.

Ros' replacement. Dave is moving from platform duties to the announcer's position in November. More to follow.

Dcuk

the box mascot. He often goes on holiday with the signallers and has travelled far and wide but most of the time sits in the Panel keeping an eye on the Signallers!

Why not meet the Dcuk family.
